Centuries in the future, in a city that calls itself Atlanta, Georgia, four teenagers meet on the first day of high school.  Saera is quiet, gentle, bookish, and inquisitive.  Marin is pretty, vibrant, emotional, and empathic.  Ardo is fierce, profane, artistic, and combative.  Terry is somber, thoughtful, isolated, and intense.

By sheer chance, the four of them sit together in their first Lunch period that day.  And, to their surprise, a bond is forged, and a friendship grows between the four of them, one that deepens throughout the school year as chance, conflict, curriculum, and care conspire to draw the four of them intimately close together.

But in the depths of the Winter, something changes.  Strange powers awaken: ties are revealed to the ancient Elements of Air, Water, Fire, and Earth.  Amid the ordinary settings of high school friendship, an epic begins to take shape.

And a mystery arises, the solution to which will change the lives of Saera, Marin, Ardo, and Terry forever.
